288 Calgary group - the Chinese origin Scout Troop was
formed in September 1994 having only four Scouts and four
Scouters. These were actually a transfer of the members who
wanted to remain in Scouting from 234 Calgary Group which
was terminated at the end of August the same year. The
latter was a sponsored Group by the Calgary Chinese Public
School.
These few die-hard Scouts and Scouters faced a big problem
in the beginning because of venue of meeting place among
several other difficulties such as finance and source of
membership. Scouter Linus requested the help from the
Calgary Region then, and was granted the permission to use
the Calgary Regional Headquarters building, the BP House,
for their Sundays meeting. With four Scouts to start in the
Scout Troop, the 288 Calgary Group today has three sections
totaling about 50 Cubs, Scouts and Venture Scouts. We now
use the Boy's & Girl's Club as our indoor meeting venue; the
Regional Headquarters cannot afford to grant us the use of
the BP House because they too need the premise for their
activities.
The 288 Calgary Group is especially keen in teaching our
youth the conventional Scouting skills such as knotting,
lashing, spicing, pioneering projects, mapping, use of
compass, first aid, camping hiking (including making hiking
logs) and leadership skill; recently we have added talent by
the joining of some new Scouters to bring in knowledge of
alpine hiking, winter hiking, winter camping and use of GPS
(Global Positioning System). Some of our Scout Troop and
Venture Company members have also achieved the Edinburgh's
Award up to the Gold level membership besides achieving the
Scouting own Chief Scout Award and Queen's Venturer Award,
which are the highest honour in the Scout and Venture
sections.
Due to the convince of having a few Scouters in each
section, the 288 Calgary Group is able to have new recruits
all year round. We welcome youth of both genders in the
following sections:
Cub Pack - 7 to 10 years of age
Scout Troop - 11 to 14 years of age
Venture Company - 14 to 17 years of age
Leaders - 18 years of age or over
